Graphic Novel 1
It is the year 1924. Breaths between World Wars, and prior to the Great Depression, it is a time of prosperity in the United States.
Thus the reason why 9 out of 10 demonic travel agencies are offering great packages to take your undead self out of your old haunts in Europe or Asia and come on down to visit the states! (There hasn't been deals that low since the Black Plague Vacation Discount Package of some years ago!)
Too bad for travel-minded minions of darkness the church of this alternate reality 20's is more proactive in the battle against darkness... to the point of arming their members with some powerful darkness busting gear to get the job of keeping evil down done and done.
That's where our Rush Hour odd-couple duo with a perchance for destruction comes into play!
Her name is Sister Rosette, and she does a good job putting evil down -- however she does it with a Dirty Pair style flair for destruction which seems to rack up the repair bills!
She's partnered with a seemingly meek and good boy named Chrono... however the truth about Chrono is that he's anything BUT the meek appearance he shows outwardly. He is, in fact, a demon.
Tied to Rosette through a "seal" in a timepiece that locks away his powers, he has this "form" which is quite human until he turns back to his old self (when the seal is broken).
But being tied to Rosette as he is? Whenever he uses his power it kills Rosette slowly... draining her life little by little shortening her lifespan. She is quite settled with that fact, despite the fact that it is no good... and it IS no good! Look! It's a TWO GRAPHIC NOVEL SET!! I mean I can dig short but THAT'S SHORT!! Damn!!
In this book you get to know her and Chrono, get a hint of his feelings for her (I think he must have SOME feelings for her), and watch their first major case as they must save a girl soprano, whose voice is a gift from the heavens itself.
I can't reveal much more because, well, you won't have much time with this series considering how SHORT it is! I mean WHY is this only TWO Graphic Novels long?!? Anyway it's worth it.
But it'll probably be worth it even more to also get into the Anime series since it'll mean you'd spend more "quality" time with Rosette/Chrono that way!
Ok. Let's break this down.
Chrono Crusade Breakdown the 1st
What's Hot? It's a fun title. The action is right on, and the humor is just too good. I like how it all flows together from storytelling, to artwork, to the pacing and setting of it all. Nice fun yet also exciting and all around good read! Highly recommended!
What's Not? Eh? You're kidding me! TWO GRAPHIC NOVELS?!? How short!! Oh, yeah, and I know I'm going to have this same complaint after I review Figure 17 shortly. I mean what's with that!
Moments to Remember? The interactions between Rosette and Chrono are the best. They are so odd-couple-ish the way they go at each other yet make quite a good team that it's memorable.
What to Ignore? Nothing. It's all good.
Overall? While I wish there was more "substance" to the title I guess I'll be OK with the two Graphic Novel run, and miss it once it's gone... or hope there's another series after this like Trigun/Trigun Maximum to look forward to. Oh, well. Either way it's recommended reading from me to you.
