I first heard of Dragon Ball as a tv show. When I saw that it was also a comic, I just thought it was exactly just like the show and I wouldn't get anything new from it. I was sort of right. Depending on which version of the show you have seen, you've basicly read the comic. The US version of the show is censored so those wanting to get the true version without spending $20+ on a tape can spend $12 on the manga. The show has added seens because the 15 page chapters are not enough for 30 minutes worth of stuff. But since it's not as long as the show, the pace is a lot quicker and more exciting.
The series began in 1984 and was published in the weekly Shonen Jump magazine. It starts off as a comedy and then slowly begins to change into an action comedy and then just action. Those of you who are used to the action in DBZ will find the first book very weard since there's hardly any fighting at all let alone a energy attack. The art looks nice and clean looking...it's just like the show...so it's not exactly the most detailed either. Viz did a nice job on the translation and I'm very pleased that they didn't mirror -image the pictures. That means you have to read it from right to left instead of left to right like in English.
Now for the story. You start off with a little boy named Goku who lives in a forest living by himself. He doesn't seem to be normal because he has a tail and he seems to have in-human strength. Soon, he runs into a girl named Bulma from the big city. She tells him about the Dragon Balls and they go off to collect them. That's just the first chapter and I won't spoil anymore. They meet lots of interesting characters. My favorite is Kame Sen'nin. The fighting in the first 2 books are just breif sequences that are more funny that actual battles. The real fighting begins at the end of volume 3. The fights here are more interesting than the ones in DBZ because the fights here are still hand to hand instead of energy blasts.
So, if you're looking for a action-comedy, Dragon Ball is for you. Just to warn you, there's some sceens of nudity and blood but nothing offensve. The nudity is used for comedy purposes.
8/10
